Iraq War: Cindy Lee Miller Sheehan
The Iraq War began in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by a United States led coalition, that overthrew the government that Saddam Hussein ruled. The US declared war against international terrorism and was led by President George W. Bush following the terrorist attack on New York on September 11th. The Iraq war had created between 150,000 to 460,000 casualties. The war happened in two stages the first was in March/April 2003, where US and British troops invaded Iraq and defeated Iraqi militants. In the second stage US led occupation of Iraq was opposed by an insurgency. In 2007 the US gradually reduced its presence as violence subsided, then in December 2011 they formally withdraw.
An American mother to US army specialist Casey Sheehan, who was killed in action during the Iraq war, began protesting against her sons death. Cindy Lee Miller Sheehan, attracted a lot of media attention when she became a figure head in the anti war movement on the Iraq War. in August 2005 she created a makeshift camp outside of the Texas home of President George W. Bush. Cindy Sheeran believed that the US didn't handle the war in a suitable manner, and that her son died for no reason. She did not understand the reason for invading Iraq and never thought that Iraq was a immediate threat to America. Her protests created support and criticism.
The make shift camp that Cindy created was used for Cindy to stay in until the President would meet with her to discuss her sons death. Her protest was publicised, and up to 1,500 people came to support her including members of US congress, celebrities and civil rights activists. They brought with them anti war posters, and hammered white crosses into the ground.
War Veterans and relatives criticised her protests, saying it was a distraction and wanted the focus to be on supporting those who are serving in the war.
